“Dawn Comes Early” is the first book in my Brides of Last Chance Ranch series.  It takes place in Arizona Territory In 1895.

Not only does she have to deal with a hard-nosed ranch owner, and nefarious outlaw, but a traitorous heart.  Kate does not trust men and has no intention of falling for LUKE ADAM’S charm.  She’s determined to learn the ranching business and prove to the doubting ranch owner that she’s up to the task—if it kills her.  If only she could stay away from a certain handsome blacksmith and his two matchmaking aunts.

What inspired this book?

The idea for the book came to me after reading an old newspaper article in the New York Times dated 1891. A group of fifty ladies of the First Church of Millford formed a society of old maids in 1861. Each member vowed she would not marry. Each woman paid five dollars on admission with the principal going to the one who remained unmarried the longest.



Thirty years later all but fifteen of the original had married. I was never able to find out who won the prize—and being a romantic I sincerely hope no one did— but the great thing about being a writer is that when real life fails imagination takes over.

What has been your most challenging experience writing a book?

In my other life I was a teacher. At a teacher’s workshop I once attended the instructor asked the following life changing questions: At the end of your career which will you be able to say? That you taught for 35 years? Or that you taught one year 35 times?


I use that same philosophy in my writing career. I don’t want to write the same book 35 or 40 times. So the biggest challenge for me is to stay fresh.

What is your favorite thing to write about, (i.e., forgiveness, rebellion, etc)?

My favorite theme is forgiveness because that’s what I personally struggle with the most. The heroine in Dawn Comes Early struggles with forgiving her mother and all the men in her past that did her harm.   Unless she makes peace with the past, she can never find true happiness.

What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

Kate’s past keeps her from realizing God’s plan for her. We all hold on to unpleasant memories and hurts to a certain extent. Sometimes we do this unconsciously by calling ourselves survivors.  Those who survive adversity through God’s love are described in the Bible as “More than conquerors.”   What a difference a word makes!  Surviving adversity isn’t enough; we have to conquer it. That’s what I hope readers will take away from this story.   

What project are you currently working on?

I just finished the second book in the Brides of Last Chance series.  “Waiting for Morning” will be available January 2012.  I’m now working on the third book and also a novella.  I’m also excited to announce that my first non-fiction book Grieving God’s Way: The Path to Hope and Healing will be available in July.
